Support More Dredging to Improve Water Quality and Navigation In Suffolk County

Dredging has been proven to improve water quality by increasing the flushing of our harbors and bays, and is essential to safe navigation of boats. However, dredging in Suffolk County has been severely constrained by lack of funding, and by permitting requirements that have unreasonably restricted the time windows when dredging can occur, the placement of dredged materials, and the locations where dredging can be done.  As a result, water quality has deteriorated and harmful algae blooms are becoming more frequent, and boating accidents have occurred when boats have run aground in marked navigation channels that should have been dredged.

By signing this petition you are telling legislators and permit administrators at the Local, County, State and Federal levels that you support:

  • Increased funding for the Suffolk County dredging program and for dredging by local Townships
  • Streamlining permitting and easing constraints on dredging including expanding the dredging time windows, and getting the Federal (US Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish & Wildlife) and State (NYS DEC) agencies to recognize the issue and to enable more dredging.

Moriches Inlet is increasingly difficult to navigate; dredging would decrease the danger. Also, the inlet is crucial in keeping the bay clean, which in turn is beneficial to the diversity of species living and proliferating there. Dredge, please!
